Crazy Money

This survey found that over 43% of people surveyed stated that they found it very difficult to stay within their budget originally set by them. As each year passes the Irish couples seem to be spending more and more on their big day. Since 2018 the figures have gone up thousands each year. This survey consisted of over 1,400 people and the majority of them had planned to get married in 2020.

The couples survey average guest figures came to just over 160 guests, and the average cost per guest was €72. The top places to celebrate your wedding is firstly hotels, a country house and followed by luxury Irish castles.

The couples were asked the question after their wedding, what they would have changed about their wedding day and the answers vary from, not getting a videographer, not saving more rather than getting a loan and doing what they wanted rather than trying to please other people. As you guessed it a weekend wedding is still the most popular time of the week to wed, with July being the busiest month for a wedding.

Wedding Day

December is the most popular month for people to ask their loved one to marry them, most of these loved up couples get married within two years of the engagement date and just a small 10% get married within the year. You would think that religious weddings would be on the decline in Ireland but they are still the most popular with a whopping 56% of couples opting for this type of ceremony. I think as the years go on this will decline as we see more and more couples choosing civil ceremonies.

So where does all the money go? The majority of the money goes to the wedding venue, followed close by the wedding entertainment and the dress.

Would you spend nearly €30,000 on one day? That would be a big fat NO for me. I would say no even before this crazy lockdown. I think people will think twice about how much they spend on their wedding day. So many are out of work or their job security is not yet known, all this might push people to more low key, budget friendly weddings. Only time will tell, 2020 you’ve been wild.
