Could You Stick To This Routine?

This Baby’s Day Manual From The 1950’s Will Make You Laugh

A discovered manual from the 1950s is making all us modern-day parents laugh! This 1950’s manual surfaced on a Facebook page and has been doing the rounds ever since due to its advice to parents on their baby’s day. Being a parent myself I can’t see this working for me, mauve it did over 70 so years ago.

  • So a day in a baby’s life in the 1950s starts at 6 am with a first feed, change the baby, hold out (I’m not sure what this even means?), and then place them down again to sleep.
  • Then at approximately the baby gets to have some water
  • The mother would then allow the baby to kick out on the bed naked for some reason before a bath at 9.30 am
  • 10 am baby gets another feed, are again held out, and yes put outside to sleep. This is the part that gets me. I couldn’t dream of putting my baby outside to sleep so I’m not sure how this worked back in the 1950s.
  • By 1 the baby is given more water, yummy! They are allowed to kick and play and in winter gave a sunshine bath.
  • 2 pm sees baby eating again and another good old hold out. It’s then time for the baby to get some mothering.
  • At 4 pm it’s time for the baby to have some orange juice and then another bath. How dirty could the baby get in such a short period of time?
  • At 6 pm there is another feeding and holding out, I’m beginning to think holding out is something to do with the baby’s bowel movements but I’m still none the wiser.  Add in some more mothering here.
  • The baby then must go to sleep, ensuring no lights, open windows, and no dummy.
  • Crazy, the baby gets another feed at 10 or 11 pm but in a darkened room. The baby then goes to sleep and the following day the routine starts all over again.

This baby schedule has me as a mother puzzled, but maybe we modern mothers are doing it all wrong. Personally having Peppa pig on loop and grabbing a nap any chance I can is the way forward.

If this is the standard routine, I could only imagine the kind of gifts people would make or buy for babies. Thankfully we have a wide range of baby gifts that won’t break the bank or offend. Choose from baby blankets. Baby comforters, baby gifts, personalised baby cards, and much more. We might not know what holding out is from the 1950s but we know a great baby gift!
